Adia visits China

I’m very excited to announce that Adia will be visiting China next week on a trade mission with the London-Co Investment Fund, kindly hosted by the Cocoon Network.
London Co-Investment Fund are taking nine of their portfolio companies, with the aim of building links between the UK and China, and helping UK entrepreneurs to understand the Chinese market as well as connecting them to prospective buyers and investors. In this blog I set out why we’re excited about the opportunity, and how you can follow the progress of the trip.
China, just like the UK, is seeing a big demographic shift, where women are having children later and later.

In 2014 alone Hong Kong saw a 90% surge in women aged 40 and above giving birth.
Alongside increasing maternal age, in line global trends China is also witnessing a national rise in levels of obesity. In 1975, only 0.5% of Chinese adults were obese. Today, China’s obesity rate is about 8%. That difference amounts to over 100 million people.

These trends mean that more and more women are struggling with fertility issues – age, BMI and lifestyle factors such as smoking are all drivers of pregnancy and fertility complications.
A recent change in government policy is significant for China’s fertility market too. China has historically had a one child policy, but this has recently been changed to a two child policy. This means there are more people exploring the option of having an additional child.
All this means there is an increasing demand for fertility services. BIS research predicts that the market inside China for fertility services will reach $1.5 billion in 2022, more than double the $670 million it generated in 2016. China had more than 40 million patients with fertility problems in 2016, according to statistics from China’s National Health and Family Planning Commission.
Adia, a new proactive approach
Adia offers a much-needed new approach to fertility. At the moment, our approach to fertility is purely reactive, we only intervene after at least a year of trying, or multiple complications – in a world where women are having children later and later, this system is no longer fit for purpose. Adia provides women with at-home fertility tests that provide insight on important markers of fertility, such as the number and quality of eggs, ovulation and hormone health. This provides women with an opportunity to identify any issues early and ensures they get the support they need.
There is also very little awareness of the role of preconception health in laying the foundations for a healthy pregnancy and baby. We’re given lots of education on how to avoid pregnancy, but not to plan for it! Adia has developed a three month plan for preconception health – which, importantly, supports women to boost both their physical and emotional health, supported by leading experts. And all this support from the comfort of your own home.
Adia is visiting China primarily to understand the Chinese market – but there’s no doubt that there’s a big opportunity. I’m really excited about the connections we’ll make and the potential opportunity to expand Adia into China.
